Esta historia comienza en 1019. Elizabeth Hughes estaba viviendo con su familia in Washington DC, en Los Estados Unidos de América. Su padre era un famoso político americano.
1.Cuando Elizabeth tenía 11 años, ella enfermó. El doctor dijo que tenía diabetes.
-No hay cura. Si ella come muy poco, ella puede vivir más tiempo.
2. Un cientofico en Toronto, Dr Frederick Banting, estaba buscando una cura para la diabetes.
-Nosotros necesitamos identificar el químico en el páncreas que controla la cantidad de azúcar en la sangre.
3.Elizabeth se volvió delgada y débil.
-Ella acababa de comer, pero aún seguía teniendo hambre.
-Pero es peligroso darla más comida.
4.En 1922, Dr Banting descubrió el químico llamado insulina. La madre de Elizabeth fue a verlo y pedirle ayuda..
-Pero nosotros no hemos terminado de probarlo todavía.
5. Dr Banting estaba de acuerdo en intentarlo. Él dio insulina a Elizabeth dos veces al día.
- ¡Mira! Ella acaba de pasear por el jardín por sí misma.
6. Elizabeth tomó insulina todos los días y vivió una vida sana hasta que tuvo más de 70 años.
-Dr Banting recibió el Premio Nobel de Medicina en 1923.
